Use of e-Learning platform for teaching and learning during this self-quarantine period

Kisii University participates in a Capacity Building workshop at Birmingham City University under the AHEAD project

Kisii University jointly with nine Universities from East Africa and five Institutions from the European Union are currently implementing a European Union co-funded project entitled “African Higher Education Leadership in Advancing Inclusive Innovation for Development/AHEAD”. The project seeks to build capacity to manage and lead innovations in developing country Universities.

In May 2019, a group of researchers from Kisii University and from the other Universities in East Africa attended a capacity building workshop dubbed “train the trainers workshop” at Birmingham City University, UK. The aim of the joint training event was to ensure the transferability and multiplication of the AHEAD open educational recourses (OERs) by preparing faculty members and researches from the PC universities to teach and/or train in the area of innovation management and inclusive innovations, as well as entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship education. The workshop focused on the following themes:

  • Delivery of entrepreneurship teaching/ training;
  • Human-centred Design, Design Thinking and Social innovation, customer development process;
  • Innovation systems;
  • Types of innovations;
  • Technological learning, technological catch-up, technological leapfrogging;
  • Inclusive and Grassroots innovation.

During the workshop period, there were guest lecturers from Birmingham City University and Coventry University that focused on various case studies including the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) – the most successful government funded programme for linking business and universities; and the STEAM house – a collaboration space for developing innovations by entrepreneurs and start-ups where free business support is provided, as well as access to makerspace workshops and co-working space, a programme of STEAMlabs and events led by industry experts from many different sectors.

To this end, there will be multiplication meetings held at Kisii University to disseminate the knowledge acquired to students and staff with the aim of enhancing KSU’s capacity to manage and lead innovations.
